Personality: Chivalrous and kind, Shinrai is very easy to get along with. He exudes amiability and friendliness, eager to make conversation and also eager to listen. He has a persona that seems utterly genuine to most, although gives a certain aura of untrustworthiness. Having grown up essentially lying to live, he is very good at it, and he lies so effectively that one might believe there is no truth to the lie. He can quickly find the exact way to gain the most positive interaction with someone else and shift his entire persona like water. Unless trained, most people won't even know they've been had.

However, the truth is that Shinrai does not feel emotions. He has never felt happiness, sadness, joy, love, fear, nervousness, or anger. He can mimic each of those things perfectly, but inside he is always empty. The only thing he even shows remote attachment to is Lightning Country itself, and the way he approaches it is not with passion but with pragmatism, as though he were a programmed machine. Perhaps it might be said that there is little difference between his true personality and the personas he wears every day, such as during his day to day life as Raikage.

He is loyal to the previous Raikage with every fiber of his being, having been conditioned since infancy. With the Sandaime's passing, his reason to live is to complete the work that Zenchi did not. He approaches matters with complete patriotism and asserts that everyone else in Kumo must do the same. Quarrel is not tolerated, and should he find out that sedition is brewing, he will deal with it himself, as one rips a knife from their bleeding body.

General Fighting Style: Shinrai fights with a combination of clever tactics and agility. A pioneer of stealth, he is one of the greatest known users of Dustless Bewildering Cover in the world. He utilizes his Diamond Release to create the ultimate defense and offense, truly representing the concept of 'vajra', which has both the properties of a diamond (indestructibility) and a thunderbolt (irresistible force).

Past Profile

History: Shinrai was originally born in Sword Country. As part of the Saihyou clan, he was next among the storied Diamond Release wielders. A founding clan of Sword Country, the Saihyou were very much responsible for much of its history, although they never were as numerous or powerful as the clans of the more established countries. The Saihyou were among the first massacred in the brutal annexation of Sword Country, cutting short their influence and putting an end to their famous power.

Zenchi, the dread conqueror, saved one, however. The Diamond Release was simply too powerful to allow going extinct, and so Zenchi took the youngest one, just born, and took him under his wing. No one would make a more perfect dog than a boy with one of the most powerful bloodlines to exist, and so the Raikage took him in secret, giving him over to his loyal faction of ANBU to drill one thing into him--perfect absolute loyalty. Under the banner of Lightning, he would never be afforded an opportunity to think of anything else.

He grew up conditioned. Of focus were stifling his emotions early and accelerating his learning as much as possible. Having known nothing else, he grew up to be the very thing that Zenchi wanted--a tool with which to further his ambitions. His rapid progress in the ninja arts and academics in the meantime prompted Zenchi to give him more leeway, and eventually he told Shinrai his history, how his family had been slaughtered by the man who raised him, and that he’d been the instrument of country’s demise. Shinrai merely shrugged and said, “I don’t mind. We’re better for it, aren’t we?”

From there he was placed in ANBU, learning how to put on fake emotions and personalities in front of others. And in addition to that, he continued to grow as a shinobi. Rather than making him an ANBU captain when he became strong enough, Zenchi decided to deploy him as Cloud’s spymaster, utilizing his prodigal talent in putting on convincing fake personas, so Shinrai spent the remainder of Zenchi’s life away from the country. By this point he was Zenchi’s match in combat--his diamond release earned him the moniker of Kumo’s ‘vajra’ -- an epitome of indestructibility and inevitability.

When Zenchi died of age-related issues later on, Shinrai immediately returned to Kumo to contest the vacant seat of Raikage. There were several other contenders, but Shinrai put an end to their lives quickly enough, securing the power to continue Zenchi’s ambitions after the vacuum. He intended to continue Kumo’s legacy of conquest, as that was the strongest expression of loyalty he could ever know.
