The Shinigami Application

Name: Touya Muramasa (村正冬夜, Muramasa Touya)
Alias: Sennen no Eiri (千年の鋭利, Thousand-Year Sharpness)
Real Age: 1220
Phys. Age: 25
Gender: Male
Personality: Touya is laid back and carefree, eager to learn and happy to teach. He is as wistful and wild as the wind, and he grows antsy at the first sign of containment or restriction. Personal freedom is his ultimate desire, and that shows in his occasionally negligent service to the Gotei.

He takes his duties seriously, but his definition of “seriously” is not the same as many others’, and so to them he can appear uncaring and negligent. Touya doesn’t really care about anyone else’s opinion, however, so this fact doesn’t weigh to heavily on him. With others he strives to be as casual as possible. Formality never suited him well, and he feels awkward whenever he has to be overly polite.

He trains religiously. Swordsmanship is his first hobby, and in his free time he does his best to come up with new techniques and maneuvers for the Jinken-Ryuu sword style he developed. Other than that, he likes to travel, and frequently takes unofficial vacations to the world of the living to sightsee. His ideal life would be one with no home, where he could come and go where he pleases. He does resent the organized structure of the Gotei somewhat, but he does recognize that it has a purpose. He appreciates a good drink, always has a story, and loves immersing himself in culture.

Combat Information

General Fighting Style: Touya is known as the Gotei’s Sennen no Eiri, and he earned this title through his utter mastery of the sword. He is courageous and composed, and he fights with wisdom and talent, developed over many years of training with Muramasa-family traditions. He enjoys the thrill of combat, viewing it as an enlightened and playful state of being. Even in the most difficult situations, he grins and laughs.

He can distinguish between situations where he must hold back and situations where he must fight to his best, and he will do his best to perform admirably on either front. He is wily and cunning, and in proper Muramasa fashion, honor and bushido have no meaning to him. He’ll use every trick in the book to gain an edge in combat, and he encourages others to do the same.

He wants to make sure everyone does their best in combat no matter what. He’s been known to correct the form of Hollows before slaying them, an action that some view as improper.

Ability Name: Jinken-Ryuu (迅剣流, Swift-Blade Style)
Ability Description: Jinken-Ryuu is a school of swordplay that forms a subset of standard Zanjutsu, putting particular emphasis on precision technique and speed over raw power. Masters of this style are regarded as those who can cut apart the air itself, spare the innocent from the blade of their sword, or sever raindrops as they fall from the sky.


  • Saiho (再歩, Step Again): An advanced sword technique that makes it seem like the user is attacking again when they really shouldn’t. Touya makes a string of sword attacks over the course of one post such that each attack seems to happen twice. (4 post cooldown)

  • Gosakugen (五削減, Five Cuts): Touya makes an attack at five different locations on the target that he can reach in the span of a second. (2 post cooldown)

  • Hakiru (葉切る, To Cut Leaves): With extremely fast and precise strikes, Touya destroys any number of bala-level or weaker projectiles that would hit him in the span of a post. (2 post cooldown)

  • Yugamu (歪む, To Swerve): With the tip of his sword, a bit of his own reiatsu, and perfect precision, Touya catches an energy-based attack aimed at him and deflects it in a direction of his choice. (cooldown: cooldown of deflected attack + 1)


Ability Name: Advanced Hoho
Ability Description: Advanced Hoho refers to footwork techniques that are beyond the scope of ordinary Shunpo.

  • Shouho (囁歩, Whispering Step): Sounds caused by Touya moving, such as footsteps or rustling clothes, are almost completely inaudible. (Passive)

  • Utsusemi (空蝉, Cast-Off Cicada Shell): Using an article of clothing or some other item, Touya creates a distraction to allow himself to escape an attack. Touya can shunpo to a place of his choosing while dodging any kind of targeted attack. (5 post cooldown)



Zanpakuto

Sealed Appearance: Nogitsune is the collective name of the daisho zanpakuto that Touya wields. It is a featureless pair of ordinary katana and wakizashi, each of which have flat disks for guards.
Zanpakutou Name: Nogitsune (野狐, Wild Fox)
Call Out Command: Black wind, bringer of death, howl across the plains! Wretched vagabond, welcoming of death, kneel and tear out your own heart!



Shikai

Appearance: The blades each gain a protrusion that makes both look like sharpened tuning forks.
Abilities:

Ability Name: Nagaredama (流れ霊, Wandering Spirit)
Ability Description: Nogitsune causes an illusory double of Touya to appear exactly where he’s standing. Touya holds one of the swords while the double holds the other. Nogitsune’s swords are the only things that the double can physically interact with, and any other object passes right through it. They don’t each have to have one sword, Touya can hold both while the double holds none or vice versa. The swords are never duplicated, though. (Cooldowns for all sword techniques the double uses are shared with the original. i.e., a four-post cooldown ability used by the original cannot then be used by the double until the ability cools down.)

  • Overlap: When the double overlaps with Touya, this enables certain tricky maneuvers that can be hard to predict and follow. For example, the double might overlap with Touya to create a feint, or it might cover Touya while he makes a different attack.

  • Exchange: With a four-post cooldown, Touya can instantly switch places with his double.


Ability Name: Foxfire (狐火, Kitsunebi)
Ability Description: Between the prongs of either of the swords, Touya forms a column of intense swirling wind that shoots out in a straight line. The attack's intensity is enough to shave straight through ordinary objects, and spiritually empowered objects will receive Cero damage on a hit. (1 post cooldown)

Ability Name: Sneer (嗤狐, Warau)
Ability Description: Swinging one of the blades around him creates a half-circle vaccuum wave that cuts apart whatever is in its way. The attack cuts at cero strength. (1 post cooldown)

Ability Name: Foxclaw (狐爪, Kosou)
Ability Description: A quick flick of the blade creates a small bead of wind that swirls into a drilling shape, approaching the opponent. It attacks at bala strength, and Touya can use this in succession. (At will)



Bankai

New Name: Kusanagi Nogitsune (草薙野狐, Grasscutter Wild Fox)

Appearance: The wind picks up around Touya. There is still no apparent change in the blades’ appearance.
Abilities:

Ability Name: Fuujin no Kankatsu (風神権限, Wind God’s Juristiction)
Ability Description: Touya can change the direction and speed of the wind in the area around him. This is mostly cosmetic, but it can cause problems to opponents who are flying, particularly if they are using wings or propellors to stay aloft, as they can be brought down by particularly strong downdrafts or crosswinds.

Ability Name: Fuujin no Ken (風神剣, Wind God’s Sword)
Ability Description: The winds obey the whims of Touya’s swords. Touya can strike at any range with Nogitsune as the wind cuts his opponent as though he were there himself.

Ability Name: Tatsumaki (竜巻, Tornado)
Ability Description: Touya whips up a wind around himself or a point of his choosing that swirls at high speeds around the chosen point. The wind cuts like a thousand blades, dealing twice cero damage to things that cross its barrier. It destroys projectiles of equal or weaker damage than it. (3 post cooldown)

Ability Name: Shippuu (疾風, Gale)
Ability Description: Touya points in a direction with his sword. The wind changes to start blowing in that direction, and for the next post, cuts like innumerable swords. The attack deals twice cero damage to things in a line 100 feet long and ten feet wide in the direction Touya points. (2 post cooldown)

Ability Name: Taifuu (台風, Hurricane)
Ability Description: Touya sweeps his sword in an arc around him, summoning an incredibly powerful gale. Like Tatsumaki, but fifty feet in radius, the wind swirls around Touya and deals Gran-Rey damage to any one in its radius. There is a safe zone (Taifuu no Me) within a 1-meter radius of Touya. Touya can deactivate the Taifuu no Me, but he takes cero damage if he does. (4-post cooldown)

New Name: Furousha Tenko(浮浪者天狐, Heavenly Fox the Vagabond)



Backdrop

History: Born into the Muramasa family, his reputation was already established before he could walk. The Muramasa family, while not notable by any means, has a reputation of producing “evil” zanpakuto, since the very first zanpakuto, Juuchi Yosamu, wielded by the clan’s founder Sengo Muramasa. Since then, they also developed a reputation for swordsmanship and smithing, and so many excellent Shinigami have come from the family.

They had high hopes for Touya, whose name was inspired by his progenitor’s sword, and in swordsmanship he fulfilled all of their greatest desires, completing his family training at a very young age. His personality, however, was incompatible with his family’s and so upon growing up, he was distanced from family affairs. He was placed in the Onmitsukidou upon graduation from the Academy, serving the Detention Unit far from the eyes of anyone his family cared about. However, here he still distinguished himself and although the mission of his division conflicted with his personal ideals, he stuck with it.

He moved from head of the Detention Unit to Division 1 when the position opened. Although he had good relations with the Onmitsukidou commander-in-chief, he felt that he needed the freedom that was promised outside of Onmitsukido. Additionally, Division 1 provided a venue with which to better enhance his own sword skills and where he could teach others the ways that he’d come up with over the years of his training.
